Registration Renewal

All Hawaii registered vehicles must be renewed on an annual basis in the county where the vehicle is registered and being driven. Renewal application forms are mailed to the registered owner at the address of record approximately 45 days before the vehicle's expiration date. You can register your vehicle by mail.

Show me the renewal form part 1 and part 2. Use browser back button to return to this page.

To renew your registration by mail with the renewal application form, you must submit the entire renewal application form, your check for the amount due on the registration form, and a current vehicle safety inspection certificate. Mailed renewals must be post marked no later than 10 working days before the end of the expiration month.

County refusal to renew

If your renewal application states that you have outstanding traffic violations, you must submit a written clearance letter for that vehicle before your renewal application can be processed. We can assist you in obtaining the clearance letter.

You can pay all traffic fines for violations (except for mandatory court appearances or violations which have become warrants), obtain a clearance letter, and renew your registration with one call to our support center.

If you did not receive your renewal application by mail within 45 days of your expiration date, Aloha Vehicle Registration Online can use your current certificate of registration to issue a renewal. If you have lost your current registration, Hawaii Vehicle Registration Service can replace it. To renew, please send the following items to our processing center. Call our support center for information.

  • Current Certificate of Registration (if expired there are fines to pay)
  • Current Vehicle Safety inspection (yellow copy preferred)
  • Clearance letter (if required. Aloha Vehicle Registration Online can provide this for you for you if needed).

If you have any questions, please call or email support center.

If there is an address error on your renewal application, or on your current registration, line out the incorrect address and print your correct address before submitting these documents for renewal. For any other type of error, notify Aloha Vehicle Registration Online immediately.

The penalty for failure to renew on time is 10% of the motor vehicle weight tax.

If you are the buyer of a vehicle that you need to register, print and sign your name on the appropriate lines of the reverse side of the certificate of title. If you are not the lien holder (there is a loan), the new lien holder must complete the appropriate section on the title. If the vehicle is to be registered in joint ownership, both parties must sign. To register a vehicle you have just purchased, you need to send the following items to us.

  • The properly endorsed certificate of title
  • Current certificate of registration
  • Current safety inspection certificate

And you need to renew the registration within 30 days from the transfer date of the vehicle, or you will be charged a late transfer fee of $60. If you are registering a car you just purchased, you will get credit for the prorated portion of the vehicle registration fee paid by the previous owner if the registration is unexpired, or will not expire for at least 45 days. If you are registering the vehicle in the name of a business, you need to bring with you or have on file, a letter of authorization for you to buy vehicles on behalf of the business.
